Riomaggiore is the most southern village of the Cinque Terre. With brightly colored houses built vertically up the surrounding hills, Riomaggiore is the second largest of the five villages and is widely known for excellent diving spots off it’s coast in the protected marine area that stretches all along the Cinque Terre. In Riomaggiore starts the Via dell’ Amore (Lover’s Lane), a wonderful path known for the romantic atmosphere and amazing landscapes. It leads to Manarola and it takes twenty minutes walking: during summer the Via dell’ Amore’s romantic atmosphere gets a bit disturbed by the excessive number of tourists. Nevertheless, we recommend you to have a rest along the street, on one of the numerous benches excavated into the rocks. We guarantee you amazing photos.
Manarola, built on a high rock 70 meters above sea level, is one of the most charming and romantic of the Cinque Terre villages. The tiny harbor features a boat ramp, picturesque multicolored houses facing the sea, a tiny piazza with seafood restaurants. The village is all ups and downs, with steep narrow alleys Carrugi, leading to the sea. Known for its wine production, Manarola produces the unique dessert wine called Sciacchetrà which can only be found in this area.
The coastline between Manarola and Corniglia is full of hidden treasures we will explore before reach the middle village of the Cinque Terre. Sitting 100 meters high on a cliff face, Corniglia is the only of the villages without a harbor and features a panoramic terrace where you can see Manarola and Riomaggiore to the south and Vernazza and Monterosso to the north.
The UNESCO majestic village of Vernazza is probably the most characteristic of the Cinque Terre and is classified as one of the most beautiful villages in Italy. Vernazza was founded about 1000 A.D. and was ruled by the Republic of Genoa starting in 1276. The medieval castle, Belforte, was built in the mid-1500’s, primarily to protect the village from pirates. An ideal way to arrive to this breathtaking village is by sea. The tiny port is surrounded by subtle colorful pastels and the charming piazza is lined with good restaurants and bars. The village is surrounded by very steeply-terraced olive groves which are said to produce among the finest olive oil in the country. We can even stop at a characteristic wine cellar.
The northern most village of the Cinque Terre is Monterosso, which is separated into two sides: the historic center and the “new” side called Fegina, with a pedestrian tunnel connecting the two. Monterosso is more sprawling than the other villages and is the only one that offers beach services, therefore making it the most visited of the Cinque Terre.
To guarantee a smooth and pleasant experience for your visit, we recommend choosing between these two itineraries, designed by our local expert guides.
And still, you’re welcome in customizing your excursion.
Corniglia + Vernazza + Monterosso
You first will get in the village of Corniglia, the one with the most impressive view, just on top of the other 4 villages (cinque terre means “five lands / villages”); afterwards we could take you to Vernazza, the most fascinating of the five. Last stop is in Monterosso, the fifth, the northrner, which really deserve to be visited
Corniglia + Vernazza + Portovenere
You first will get in the village of Corniglia, the one with the most impressive view, just on top of the other 4 villages (cinque terre means “five lands / villages”); afterwards we could take you to Vernazza, the most fascinating of the five. Last stop is in Portovenere, which really deserve to be visited, is a charming sea village, not one of the Cinque Terre. But it enjoys a strategic and panoramic position on the Gulf of Poets. Portovenere is a little gem waiting to be discovered, still hidden from most of the tourists’ radars.
They say that the Goddess Venus was born from the sea foam in this place… anyway, for sure Portovenere dates back to the Roman’s time.
